Cognate Set 1087 – Meaning: forest

IE-CoR reference form:
*kai̯to-
IE-CoR reference language:
Proto-Celtic
Ideophonic:
no
Parallel derivation:
no
Justification:
Perhaps from IE *kai̯to- (IEW 521) if inherited and comparable to Germanic terms found in Goth. haiϸi 'field', Engl. heath, etc. These forms are, however, restricted to Celtic and Germanic and we may be dealing with borrowing or (independent) borrowings from a prehistoric NW European substratum language (cf. Matasović 2009:198).

S.v. Proto-Celtic *kayto- 'wood', from IE *kai̯to- 'wood, field' ([IEW](src-49) 521), cf. Goth. haiϸi 'field'. The reflexes *kai̯to- are restricted to Celtic and Germanic; perhaps a borrowing from a NW European substratum language.
