Cognate Set 1687 – Meaning: blood

IE-CoR reference form:
*u̯elh₂-
IE-CoR reference language:
Proto-Indo-European
Ideophonic:
no
Parallel derivation:
no
Justification:
Cf. LIV² Addenda \& Corrigenda for LIV² 679 *u̯elh₃- 'schlagen' separated into two roots *u̯elh₂- 'rupfen, reißen' and *u̯elh₃- 'sterben'. The Celtic lexemes in this set have been tentatively assigned to the new root *u̯elh₂- 'beat, hit' assuming a semantic development 'beat, hit' > 'wound' > 'blood'. See further Lucht 2007:65, Matasović 2009:410.

References
  • Kümmel, Martin Joachim:
Cf. now LIV² 679 *u̯elh₃- 'schlagen' separated into two roots *u̯elh₂- 'rupfen, reißen' and *u̯elh₃- 'sterben'.
  • Lucht, Martina: 65
S.v. OIr. fuil 'blood', cf. W gweli 'Wunde', Co. goly, Bret. goulyow 'id.', generally connected to *wel- 'reißen; verwunden; töten' ([IEW](src-49) 1144f.), *u̯elh₃- 'schlagen' ([LIV²](src-141) 679).
  • Matasović, Ranko: 410
S.v. Proto-Celtic *weli-, *woli- 'blood' from PIE < *u̯elh₂/₃- 'wound' (cf. Lat. uolnus 'wound', Gk. οὐλή 'scar').
  • Rix, Helmut: 679
Cf. s.v. *u̯elh₃- 'schlagen' [IEW 1144-5]. If the Greek verb ἑάλων 'würde überwunden, wurde gefangen' does not belong to this root, then a reconstruction with final *h₂ is also possible.
  • Scarborough, Matthew:
Cf. [LIV² Addenda \& Corrigenda](src-389) for [LIV²](src-141) 679 *u̯elh₃- 'schlagen' separated into two roots *u̯elh₂- 'rupfen, reißen' and *u̯elh₃- 'sterben'. Tentatively I assign the lexemes in this class to the new root *u̯elh₂- 'beat, hit' assuming a semantic development 'beat, hit' > 'wound' > 'blood'. See further
