Cognate Set 2182 – Meaning: ash

IE-CoR reference form:
?*(s)k̑ed-
IE-CoR reference language:
Proto-Indo-European
Ideophonic:
no
Parallel derivation:
no
Justification:
Modern Indic lexemes derived to Ved. √chad- 'to cover' (Turner 1962–1966:275, nos. 5020-5021); further etymology uncertain, perhaps to PIE ?*(s)k̑ed- (IEW 919, LIV² 546) if connected with Old English hætera 'garments' (cf. EWAia I:554-555 for further discussion). The root reference form for this set tentatively follows this etymology.
