Cognate Set 2189 – Meaning: ash

IE-CoR reference form:
*bʰes-
IE-CoR reference language:
Proto-Indo-European
Ideophonic:
no
Parallel derivation:
no
Justification:
EWAia II:258-259 supposes two possible (homophonous) root etymologies either to *bʰes- 'to skew, to crunch' (cf. LIV² 82 s.v. ?*bʰes- '(zer)kauen') or *bʰes- 'to blow, to breathe', however NIL 34-36 considers these two postulated roots to be one and the same. For developments in Middle and Modern Indic, cf. Turner 1962–1966:537, no. 9425.

References
  • Mayrhofer, Manfred: II:258-59
S.v. Ved. bhásman- 'Asche', either from PIE *bʰes- 'to skew, to crunch' (LIV² 82) or from PIE *bʰes- 'to blow, to breathe'. The latter root is only preserved by nouns.
  • Scarborough, Matthew:
Following NIL 34-36 we might assume that the two Indic roots in Mayrhofer EWAia II:257-258 go back to the same root *bʰes-.
  • Turner, Ralph Lilley: 537
    S.v. 9425 Skt. bhásman- n. 'ashes'.
  • Wodtko, Dagmar S. and Irslinger, Britta and Schneider, Carolin: 34-36
S.v. *bʰes- 'reiben, fegen' (cf. LIV² 82 s.v. ?*bʰes- '(zer)kauen), IEW 145f.). NIL treats *bʰes- '(zer)kauen' as the same root as *bʰes- 'reiben, fegen', cf. p.35n1.
