Cognate Set 2290 – Meaning: hair
- IE-CoR reference form:
- ?*gái̯ća-
- IE-CoR reference language:
- Proto-Indo-Iranic
- Ideophonic:
- no
- Parallel derivation:
- no
- Justification:
- Indic lexemes from Vedic kéśa- 'hair of the head', difficult to separate from Young Avestan gaēsa- although there is disagreement over the voicing of the initial velar; EWAia I:401 suggests a contamination of an original *géśa- the Indic lexemes with Vedic késara- 'hair, mane'. For Middle and Modern Indic, cf. Turner 1962–1966:180 no. 3471.

S.v. Ved. kéśa- 'Haupthaar'; difficult to separate from Av. (º)gaēsa- 'Kraushaar', gaēsu- 'lockenhaarig', MPers. gēs, NPers. gēsū 'Locken' etc. Perhaps a contamination of *geśa- (= Av. gaēº) and késara- 'Haar, Mähne'. Further etymological connections unclear.
