Cognate Set 2644 – Meaning: flower
- IE-CoR reference form:
- *h₂endʰ-
- IE-CoR reference language:
- Proto-Indo-European
- Ideophonic:
- no
- Parallel derivation:
- no
- Justification:
- Generally compared with Vedic ándhas- 'sprout of the soma plant' which can be accounted for via an s-stem *h₂éndʰ-os- from which Greek ἄνθος would also be a regular reflex (Beekes 2010:104-105, LIV² 266, cf. EWAia I:79). See, however, Chantraine 1968–1980:89-90 with some reservations.

S.v. ἄνθος 'flower' < PIE *h₂endʰ- 'sprout'. The Greek noun is an s-stem derivative and directly equatable with Sanskrit ándhas- 'sprout of the soma plant', and an s-stem *h₂endʰ-os- may be reconstructed.
- Chantraine, Pierre: 89-90
Chantraine has reservations about the comparison with Sanskrit ándhas- on the basis that "le sens propre de plante est mal assuré en skr." Chantraine notes that ἄνθος is the proper word for flower in the katharevousa register of Modern Greek, but in demotic the lexeme has been replaced by λουλούδι [lexeme 7534](lex-7534).
- Mayrhofer, Manfred: I:79
Cf. s.v. Ved. ándhas- 'zur Somapressung verwendeter Sproß, Schoß (und ähnliches)' < PIE *h₂éndʰes- (cf. Gk. ἄνθος 'Keim, Sproß, etc.'; cf. also Fries. åndul 'feines zartes grünes Gras auf den Hellern').
- Rix, Helmut: 266
Cf. s.v. ?*h₂endʰ- 'blühen, sprießen' (IEW 40-1). Verbal only Greek, the nominal derivative ἄνθος is comparable to Ved. ándhas- 'soma plant'.
