- Generally assumed to be connected with Proto-Germanic *sehwan- 'see' (cf. cognate set 288) from PIE 1. *sekʷ- 'follow' (LIV² 525-526), cf. Kloekhorst 2008:704-706 (rejected, however, by HED SA:50-57 on the grounds that the etymology contravenes Sturtevant's Rule).

S.v. šākuu̯a- 'eye' (Anat. cognates: CLuw. tāu̯a- 'eye', HLuw. tawa/i- 'eye', Lyc. *tewe- 'eye' (coll. pl. tawa), ñtewe 'facing, opposite, toward', from Proto-Anatolian *sṓgʷo- via PIE *sókʷ-o- (cf. PGerm. sexʷan 'to see'). An alternative proposal is a connection with the root *h₃ekʷ- 'see' with an s-mobile, but this is somewhat awkward for the Anatolian-internal evidence.
