PS *zadŭ (*za-dŭ) has the same structure as *nadŭ (*na-dŭ), *podŭ (*po-dŭ), *perdŭ (*per-dŭ), and *pozdŭ (*pos-dŭ). The element *-dŭ can be an old adjective suffix or a reflex of *dheH 'put'. The hypothesis linking it to Avestan zaδah- 'buttock', Old Indic hadati 'he shits', χέζω 'shit' etc. (PIE *g̑ʰed- 'shit') is less plausible.
- Boryś, W.: 725
Polish zad 'rump' < PS *zadŭ is a compound of *za- and *-dŭ (as nad 'over', pod 'under', and przed 'in front of') with a original meaning 'back part of something, something that is behind'.
- Jocz, Lechosław:
The interpretation of *zadŭ as *za-dŭ with *za derived from the PIE pronominal root *g̑ʰe- and PIE verbal root *dʰeh₁- 'put, make' with a meaning 'something that is placed behind' seems to be most reasonable.
- Rejzek, Jiří: 731
The word is a compund of the preposition *za 'behind' and a derivative from PIE *dhe- 'put' with a original meaning 'thing that is put in the back' (the forms are nad 'over', pod 'under', and před 'in front of' have the same structure).
- Trubačev, O. N.: 22: 15-16
The PS lexeme *nadŭ 'over' is a compound of *na 'on' with *-dŭ. The postpositive element *-dŭ is most probably related to the verbal root *dě-.
- Vasmer, Max: 73
Russian 'zad' is usually linked to Avestan zadah- 'ass', Greek χέζω 'shit', Armenian jet 'tai', Old Indic hádati 'he shits', Low German gead 'ass', Irish gead 'back side' etc. However, it can be also interpreted as *za-dŭ.
