References
  • Demiraj, Bardhyl: 90-91
S.v. Alb. bardhë 'weiß, glänzend'. Meyer (1891:27)'s comparison with Goth. bairhts 'hell', Lith. béržas 'Birke' is generally accepted. The reconstruction of the form ancestral to the Albanian is not agreed, although Meyer's reconstruction of an o-grade form is phonetically unobjectionable, thus probably Alb. bardhë can be accounted for from a putative PIE *bʰorHg̑-o-.
  • Holm, Hans J.: 88-89
From PIE *bʰerh₁g̑-o- 'bright' > *bʰorh₁g̑-o- > barða-. The exact ablaut grade reflected by the Albanian form is disputed, cf. Huld (1984:40) for a zero-grade, Demiraj (1997:90), Orel (1998:17) arguing for an o-grade.
  • Huld, Martin E.: 40
S.v. Alb. bardhë 'white', following the etymology of Meyer (1891:29) to Lith. bèržas, etc., from *bʰr̥Hg̑- (IEW 139 *bherəg̑-).
  • Meyer, Gustav: 27
S.v. Alb. barθ 'weiss', to be connected with Ved. bhrājate 'er glänzt, schimmert', Av. barāzaiti 'er schimmert', Goth. bairhts.
  • Orel, Vladimir: 17
S.v. Alb. bardhë 'white', from Proto-Albanian *bardza, continuing *bʰorəg̑o-, a derivative of PIE *bʰerəg̑- 'to shine; white', cf. Skt. bhrājate 'shines, beams, glitters', Goth. bairhts 'light, shining'.
  • Rix, Helmut: 92
    Cf. s.v. *bʰreh₁g̑- 'erstrahlen, erglänzen' (IEW 139-40).
