Cognate Set 5160 – Meaning: thigh

IE-CoR reference form:
*stei̯gʰ-
IE-CoR reference language:
Proto-Indo-European
Ideophonic:
no
Parallel derivation:
no
Justification:
The etymology is considered as uncertain and relatively many different IE comparanda are given, cf. Bezlaj 1977-2005: 3: 315, Boryś 2005: 613, Rejzek 2001: 74. However, the hypothesis of Derksen 2008: 35, 466 is attractive and has been adopted here. For the semantic development see also cognate set 7765.

  • Derksen, Rick: 466
S.v. Proto-Slavic *stegnò- n. 'thigh'. If Proto-Slavic *bedro- 'thigh' contains the root *bʰedʰ- 'to stab', then *stegno 'thigh' < *stegʰ-nó-m may derive from a root 'to stab' as well (cf. Ru. stegát 'quilt', OIc. stinga 'stab, thrust'). No further etymology.
  • Scarborough, Matthew:
Reconstruction of an IE root *stei̯gʰ- 'stab' for this class would depend on the interpretation of Proto-Slavic *bedra, *bedro 'thigh' being derived from *bʰedʰ- 'stab', which is uncertain. Cf. notes in [cognate set 5207](cog-5207).
