Cognate Set 5334 – Meaning: big

IE-CoR reference form:
*selH-
IE-CoR reference language:
Proto-Indo-European
Ideophonic:
no
Parallel derivation:
no
Justification:
As though from PIE *solH-i- (Kloekhorst 2008:709-711). Cf. however HED SA alternatively considering connections to other vocabulary from a Hittite stem *sall- 'swell, expand' to be ultimately connected with Proto-Germanic *swellan- (but cf. 'swell' in cognate set 315, generally considered without certain etymology). Cf. also Tischler Hethitisches Etymologisches Glossar 2/1:767-775 for further discussion.

1   Hittite šalli- / šallai- ša-al-li-iš The form is connected a.o. with Gk. ὅλος ‘whole, complete’, Skt. śarva- ‘whole, all’, Lat. salvus ‘complete, intact’ (despite the semantic difference between 'big' and 'whole').
References
  • Kloekhorst, Alwin: 709-711
S.v. Hitt. šalli- 'big, great', which can be accounted for from PIE *solH-i-, a derivative from the same root underlying OIr. slán 'complete' < *sl̥H-no-, Lat. saluus, 'complete, intact', Gk. ὅλος 'whole, complete' Skt. sarvá- 'whole, all' < *sol-u̯o- (from earlier *solH-u̯o- with loss of laryngeal due to the o-grade).
  • Puhvel, Jaan: 68-81
Cf. s.v. Hitt. sal(l)- 'swell, expand, extend', with derivative salli- 'big, large, tall high; adult, aged, great, grand; main principal chief, royal, regal', connecting the complex of related vocabulary to PIE *s(w)el(H)- also in ON svella, OHG swellan 'swell'. The adjective salli- has otherwise been connected since Sturtevant, Comp. Gr. 138 to Skt. sárva-, Av. haurva-, Gk. οὗλος, ὅλος, Lat. sollus, 'whole' from *solwo-, which remains semantically possible.
