Cognate Set 5376 – Meaning: back

IE-CoR reference form:
iškiš-
IE-CoR reference language:
Hittite
Ideophonic:
no
Parallel derivation:
no
Justification:
Possibly to be connected with Ancient Greek ἰσχίον 'hip-joint' (HED A+E/I:424-425), but this is disputed (cf. Beekes 2010:602-603). In view of the phonological similarity and the areal proximity of the languages it could be possible that both Greek ἰσχίον and Hitt. iškiš- are both independent borrowings from a third source (cf. Kloekhorst 2008:402).

References
  • Beekes, Robert: 602-603
Cf. s.v. AGk. ἰσχίον 'hip-joint, haunches', no etymology.
  • Kloekhorst, Alwin: 402
S.v. iškiš- 'back, backside, rear', the only proposed cognate is Greek ἰσχίον 'hip(s)', but the semantic connection is not very convincing.
  • Puhvel, Jaan: 424-425
S.v. Hitt. iskis- 'back, backside, rear'. Possibly to be connected with Greek ἰσχίον 'hip-joint, hip(s)', but further connections are uncertain.
  • Scarborough, Matthew:
Possibly to be connected with Ancient Greek ἰσχίον 'hip-joint' ([HED A+E/I](src-406):424-425), but this is disputed (cf. [Beekes 2010](src-66):602-603). In view of the areal proximity it remains possible that both Greek ἰσχίον and Hitt. iškiš- are both independent borrowings from a third source (cf. [Kloekhorst 2008](src-80):402).
