References
  • Kloekhorst, Alwin: 212
S.v. Hitt. aruna- 'sea'. No generally accepted etymology. The most promising connection is with Hitt. aru-/arau- 'high' < *h₃r-éu̯-no-, which is formally possible, and a semantic parallel can be found in Skt. árṇa- 'wave, flood, stream' < *h₃er-no- *'rising (water)'. Cf. Puhvel HED A-E/I for this proposal and other alternative etymologies.
  • Puhvel, Jaan: 178-182
S.v. Hitt. aruna- 'sea'. Etymology uncertain.
