  • Macak, Martin:
Perhaps identical with մուխ mowx 'smoke' ([Olsen 1999](src-180): 33); if so then related to [cognate set 647](cog-647) [cf. cognate set 8305].For comparison, Classical Armenian աճիւն ačiwn (Bible 2x) seems to specifically refer only to the remains of a fire (cf. աճիւնախառն ačiwn-a-xaṙn 'mixed with ashes', աճիւնացուցանէմ ačiwn-a-c'owc'anem 'I reduce to ashes'); whereas մոխիր moxir (Bible 43x) has a wider, more general scope, including 'dust', etc. (cf. մոխրագոյն moxr-a-goyn 'gray, i.e. ash-colored', մոխրամած moxr-a-mac 'prostate in the dust', մոխրաթաւալ moxr-a-tᶜawal 'rolling in ashes, dirt', etc.).
