Cognate Set 5887 – Meaning: back

IE-CoR reference form:
kṙtʿunkʿ
IE-CoR reference language:
Armenian: Classical
Ideophonic:
no
Parallel derivation:
no
Justification:
Connections outside of Armenian uncertain. Within Armenian probably to be connected with Classical Armenian kuṙn '(anatom.) back; side', which in turn – if the original semantic meaning was 'curved/bending body-part' – may be related to Classical Armenian kor 'curved, crooked' (Martirosyan 2010:376, cf. id. 382, 373-374). HAB II:669 offers no etymology. [MM: Proto-Armenian *kuṙ(-tʰ)-un-].

17   Armenian: Western kṙnak կռնակ ɡərˈnɑɡ ɡurn(-)ɑɡ Apparently from կուռն kowṙ-n 'back' + -ակ -ak (forming diminutives from nominal stems).
15   Armenian: Classical kṙtʿunkʿ կռթունք kərˈtʰuŋkʰ kurtʰ-u/ɑn-kʰ Traditionally pronounced [kərtʰuŋkʰ]; cf. կուռն kowṙ-n (trad. pron.) [kurən] 'back; pelvis; arm' (from an orig. "curved body part" or the like).

S.v. Arm. kṙtʻ-un-kʻ '(anatom.) back'. [HAB](src-740) II:669 posits an unattested form *kiṙtʻn or kuṙtʻn and offers no etymology. The form is probably comparable CArm. kuṙn '(anatom.) back; side', which in turn – if the original semantic meaning was 'curved/bending body-part' – may be related to CArm. kor 'curved, crooked' (disputed etymology, cf. s.v.).
