- Proposed as cognate to:
-
lac [Middle English]
scale: 0
- Justification:
- Generally derived from a (collective?) formation *lēg-i̯a- to PIE *le⁽g̑⁾- 'to drip, trickle' (Olsen 1999:70, Jahukyan & Sargsyan 2010:297, cf. HAB II:282-283, IEW 657, LIV² 397). Possibly cognate with Modern English 'lake' if not a loanword from Old French (cf. further discussion in cognate set 5612). Alternatively, derived from the analogous formation *plēh₂g-i̯o/a- to root *pleh₂g- 'flat, wide', which is better supported by semantic parallels, cf. Kölligan 2019: 248.

Uridg. *pleh₂g-o- 'flach, breit' → vorurarm. *plēh₂g-o/eh₂ 'Meeresoberfläche' > arm. lik; vorurarm. *plēh₂g-i̯o/eh₂ > lič

Arm. lič 'lake, pond' ([IEW](src-49) 657), reconstructed as *lēgi̯a- (collective formation?) from *leg- 'tröpfeln, sickern, zergehen'. The lengthened grade is consistent with other derivatives (e.g. *to-stem W. llaith, Bret. leiz 'humid' < *lekto-).

Cf. s.v. ?*le⁽g̑⁾- 'tröpfeln' (IEW 657). Only Germanic and Celtic.
