References
  • Beekes, Robert: 184
Cf. s.v. Gk. ἀχλύς 'mist, darkness', which if cognate with OPruss. aglo then from PIE *h₂egʰlu-. An additional possible connection is to Arm. ałǰa-m-ułǰ-kʻ 'darkness' which requires a metathesis of -gʰlu- and subsequent palatalisation *gʰ > ǰ. The reduplication is typical of Armenian.
  • Derksen, Rick: 555
S.v. Old Prussian aglo 'rain'. Traditionally connected with Gk. ἀχλύς 'mist, darkness', which would be reconstructed as *h₂egʰlu-.
  • Martirosyan, Hrach: 37-39
S.v. Arm. *ałǰ- 'darkness, fog, twilight' : ałǰ-utʻiwn-kʻ 'darkness', derived by Meillet from a root *ałǰ- and connected with Gk. ἀχλύς 'mist, darkness' and OPr. aglo 'rain'. Etymology rejected by [HAB](src-740) I:335-336, but the etymology remains very plausible.
