Cognate Set 8394 – Meaning: lake

IE-CoR reference form:
λάκκ̔ο / lakkʰo
IE-CoR reference language:
Greek: Italiot
Ideophonic:
no
Parallel derivation:
no
Proposed as cognate to:
*lek- [Proto-Indo-European] scale: 0
Loan event:
yes
Parallel loan event:
no
Loan source language:
Southern Italian dialects
Justification:
Rohlfs 1964:288 considers the Italiot Greek words to be borrowings from Romance. Note, however, that AGk. λάκκος does exist, and might possibly be derived from *l̥ku̯o- (PIE *laku- or *loku-, cf. Beekes 2010:827 s.v. λάκκος and further discussion in cognate set 8246). It is difficult to exclude in principle the possibility of contamination or blending of inherited material with that of local Romance varieties. Similarly cf. Engl. lake in cognate set 5612 which may well be a semantic calque from Romance.

  • Beekes, Robert: 827
Cf. s.v. λάκκος 'pond, cistern, pit, reservoir' perhaps from a PIE zero-grade *l̥ku̯o-, but the phonetic development *-ku̯- > -κκ- is unexpected.
  • Rohlfs, Gerhard: 288
S.v. Gk. λάκκος 'Grube, Wasserloch', (bov. lákko, otr. lákko, kal. lákku, lákkə, salent. lákku, luk. lákkə 'pozza d'acqua') from a Romance plural *laccora (cf. lecc. le lákkure) regg. lákkuru 'terreno basso da un fiume'. Lákku is often river name in Calabria and Sicily.
