- From Proto-Germanic *slihta-, an adjective derived to the strong verb *sleikan- 'to creep, sneak' (Heidermanns 1993:512-513, Seebold 1970:428-429), traditionally considered to be an extended form of the root *(s)lei̯- (IEW 663-664; cf. Seebold 1970:428-429, Lehmann 1986:314), cf. LIV² 566-567 for the revised reconstruction of a separate root *(s)lei̯g̑- 'smear, make smooth'.
