Illustrative Context
This stick is straight, but that one is bent.
Target Sense
- The most generic term for straight as the basic antonym of curved, bent or crooked, and as would be applied to the prototypical case of a long and thin object such as a stick, as in the illustrative context.
- In many languages the same lexeme will be the default term applicable also to a path, line, road, and so on. Where a language has no such single cover term, however, but only distinct lexemes for these two senses, then enter the lexeme of basic vocabulary that would be applied to an actual object, as in the illustrative context, not a line or path.
- The target sense is the physical form of an object. Avoid terms that are instead specific to a directional sense of straight ahead, and presume motion to a goal, e.g. direct.
- The target sense is the literal, neutral one of the form of an object. Avoid terms that are semantic extensions, including to value judgements in terms of perceived moral ‘rectitude’ or ‘proper’ behaviour, honesty, frankness, etc..
