S.v. ξηρός 'dry, arid'. Possibly from PIE *ksē̆ro-? Proposed etymologies outside of Greek are unclear.
Clackson (among others) regards the connection between Greek ξηρός and Armenian չոր čʻor as doubtful.
Martirosyan connects Greek ξηρός with Armenian čʻir 'dried fruit' čʻor (o-stem) 'dry'. This proposed etymology is usually doubted because one normally expects Armenian cʻ from PIE *ks, *sk, but Martirosyan argues (2.1.12) that čʻ- is the correct reflex of *ks- in initial position. The etymology is possible, but this word is the only example that Martirosyan cites in favour of this sound law.
