S.v. Proto-Germanic *baka-, as though from PIE *bʰog-o-, but there are no clear cognates outside of Germanic. Borrowed into Slavic as OCS bokъ m. 'side'. Cf. n-stem *bakan- > OHG bahho, MHG bache, MDu. bake m. 'bacon'.

S.v. OHG bacho. pacho 'Rücken, dorsum; Schinken, Speckseite'. The form is an exclusively Germanic formation, but one might consider a root *bʰeg- : *bʰog- '(sich) biegen, wölben' and in this case consider is applied to the parts of the human or animal body.
