Cf. s.v. Lith. drė́gti 'to become moist, to thaw', to be interpreted as a denominal verb, the basis of which is not found in Lithuanian, but in Latvian drē̡gs m. 'thawing, muddy weather'. The latter seems to originate from a Vṛiddhi-derivation of pre-Proto-Balto-Slavic *dʰréh₁gʰo-, cf. PIE *dʰroh₁gʰ-/*dʰr̥h₁gʰ- 'deposit, yeast'.
- Kroonen, Guus: 103
S.v. Proto-Germanic *drinkan 'to drink'. The Germanic verb contains a nasalized variant of the root *dʰreg- as found in Baltic, cf. Lith. *drė́gti 'to become moist'.
- Lehmann, Winfred P.: 94-95
S.v. Gothic D33 drigkan. No accepted etymology. Possibly from PIE *dʰerH-gʰ- (cf. Lith. dìrgti, drė́gti 'become damp, etc.) or from PIE *dʰreg̑- 'move, glide' (cf. Skt. dhrájati 'glide', Lith. drė́zti 'tear', Latv. dragât 'pull'), alternatively borrowed from a pre-Germanic source, but this conjecture is unverifiable.
- Seebold, Elmar: 165-166
S.v. Gmc. *drenk-a- 'trinken', no certain etymology outside of Germanic.
