References
  • Beekes, Robert: 369-370
S.v. ἐγγύς 'near'. The first syllable seems to be the preposition/preverb ἐν 'in', the remainder is etymologically unclear. Some scholars see an old word for 'hand' in a fossilised prepositional phrase with the first syllable being the preposition/adverb ἐν, but the etymology is nevertheless obscure.
  • Chantraine, Pierre: 309
S.v. AGk. ἐγγύς (adv.) 'proche'; it is tempting to see in ἐγγύς the old noun for 'hand' as in ἐγγύη (cf. s.v. γύη, γύαλον, etc. with the preverb ἐν in the sense 'at hand').
