S.v. Skt. mákṣā 'Fliege', 'fly'; also found in Iranian (cf. Av. maxšī- Buddh. Sogd. mwγšk-), but there are no certain connections for this Indo-Iranian lexeme to other Indo-European languages. IIr. *makš- does however appear to have been loaned into Uralic at an early period (cf. Finn. mehilänen, mordwin. mekš, meš, Hungar. méh, etc. < *mekš-).
