There are two equally possible possibilities for a further etymology: (1) a derivation from a pre-form *kuHso- 'Schutz(ort)', a derivation from the IE verbal root *(s)keu̯H- 'bedecken', alternatively it may be (2) from Pre-Proto-Germanic *kudʰso- to the IE verbal root *keu̯dʰ- 'verbergen'.
