References
  • Rix, Helmut: 344-345
S.v. *keh₂p- 'fassen, schnappen' (IEW 527-528); in addition to Italic cognates are found in Germanic (NHG haben 'to have') and Greek (κάπτω 'gulp down').
  • Scarborough, Matthew:
According to [de Vaan 2008](src-54):89-90 at the time of publication, Beekes's (then still forthcoming) Greek Etymological Dictionary (now [Beekes 2010](src-66)) doubts the semantic plausibility of the connection with Gk. κάπτω with Lat. capiō. If the Greek cognates are removed from the equation, de Vaan considers that it is just as possible that the Italic and Germanic cognates may go back to a non-IE loanword. In the dictionary as published, however, [Beekes 2010](src-66) s.v. κάπτω considers that the Greek and Italic forms 'might be identical' (presumably via a zero-grade yod-present *kh₂p-i̯é- as reconstructed by [LIV²](src-141)), with some caveats.
  • de Vaan, Michiel: 89-90
S.v. Lat. capiō, -ere 'to take', from PIE *kh₂p-i- or non-IE *kap-i- 'to seize' (cf. Gk. κάπτω 'to gulp down', Go. haban 'to have' < *kap-eh₁-i̯e/o-.
