*h₁n̥gni- [Proto-Indo-European]
scale: 2
- Justification:
- Indo-Iranic lexemes from Vedic áṅgāra- 'glowing charcoal' (Turner 1962–1966:6-7, no. 125), probably further from a PIE nominal formation *ángol-/*angl- or *Héngol-/*Hengl- (cf. ALEW 41 s.v. OLith. anglìs 'coal'). A further connection to Vedic agní- 'fire' could be possible, but the details remain uncertain (cf. EWAia I:48). For Nuristan languages, cf. Strand 1998.

Cf. s.v. OLith. anglìs 'Kohle' (cf. Ved. áṅgāra- 'Kohle'), probably from a noun *ángol-/*angl- or *Héngol-/*Hengl- already in PIE.

Cf. s.v. Ved. áṅgāra- 'Kohle', probably not to be separated from Lith. anglìs, OCS ǫngь 'Kohle'. Everything else remains questionable. Possible connection to agní-, but the details are unclear.
