References
  • Kroonen, Guus: 372
Cf. s.v. Proto-Germanic *mōtan- 'to approach, concede to(?)', a preterite-present probably based on the root *mod- as attested by Arm. matčʻim 'to approach, come close' < *mod-.
  • Lehmann, Winfred P.: 145
Cf. s.v. Goth. G46. ga-motjan ἀπαντῆσαι 'meet' (within Gmc. cf. OIc. møta, OE (ge-)mētan, OFris mēta OS mōtian 'meet', etc.), from PIE *mōd- 'meet, approach', cf. Arm. matčʻim 'approach'.
  • Martirosyan, Hrach: 451-452
S.v. Arm. mat- in matčʻim, matnum 'to approach, come close', mawt 'near, close', connected to ON mót, OE mōt, etc. '(town-)meeting; assembly'; mawt presumably from Proto-Armenian *maʷt-u- due to labial epenthesis; cf. mat-čʿ-i-m 'I approach, come near'.
  • Olsen, Birgit Anette: 49-50
Arm. mōt 'near' ([IEW](src-49) 746) with the related verb matčʻim 'approach' is related to Goth. gamōtjan 'meet' etc. Proto-form is *mā̆du- < *mHdu- or *maHdu- and the o-inflection should probably be ascribed to secondary thematicisation of the u-stem by epenthesis.
