S.v. aidu- 'feu, ardeur', a word that may be adduced from the name of a Gaulish tribe, Aedui < *aidu̯oi, which could be understood as 'les Ardents'; thematisation of aidu 'fire' comparable to OIr. aed 'feu'. An old IE word *aidh- 'feu', cf. Lat. aedēs 'foyer, pièce où l'on fait le feu, temple, maison', Gk. αἶθος 'incendie', Lith. íesmē (< *aidh-smi̯ā) 'bois à brûler', Skt. édha- 'id.', etc.
