Cognate Set 6860 – Meaning: knee

IE-CoR reference form:
*klup-
IE-CoR reference language:
Proto-Baltic
Ideophonic:
no
Parallel derivation:
no
Justification:
Cf. Old Lithuanian klùpti 'to fall on the knees, stumble', traditionally connected to an IE root *kleu̯b- 'to stumble, hop' (LIV² 364, Smoczyński 2007:293, 301-302), but cf. ALEW 510-511 objecting to the comparative semantics. Not in [Derksen 2015]. Cf. also 'run' in cognate set 6948 and 'walk' in cognate set 332 for the proposed Germanic comparanda in Gothic us-hlaupan, etc.

Cf. s.v. OLith. klùpti 'auf die Knie niedersinken, stolpern, straucheln' (BSl. Latv. klupt 'stolpern, straucheln, umfallen', OPr. klupstis 'Knie'). OPr. klupstis corresponds to Lith. (dial. südaukšt.) klùpstas. For the etymology cf. OLith. klaũpti 'hinknien, niederknien', without any clear comparanda outside of Baltic. The Baltic family of words is traditionally connected to Goth. ushlaupan 'aufspringen', ON 'hlaupa 'hüpfen, springen', OE hlēpan 'springen, laufen' (cf. LIV² 364), but these are not very close semantically, and only possible if the phonological difficulties are not unsurmountable.

    Cf. s.v. *kleu̯b- 'stolpern, hüpfen' [IEW 630].
  • Smoczyński, Wojciech: 293, 301-302
Cf. s.v. Lith. klaũpti "klękać, padać na kolana" and klùpti "potykać sią, kląkać", connecting OPr. klupstis "kolano, Kny", and deriving from PIE *kleu̯b- (cf. Goth. ushlaupan "skoczyć, poderwać się na nogi", OIc. hlaupa "biec, skakać").
