As though from Sanskrit *gavatta- 'cattle-fodder', a compound containing Skt. gáv- 'cow' + *atta- 'eaten' (Turner 1962–1966:219 no. 4094). The cognacy in this cognate set reflects the element *atta- 'eaten' continuing a derivative of PIE *h₁ed- *'to bite' → 'to eat' (cf. 'eat' in cognate set 210).
