Cognate Set 8124 – Meaning: day

IE-CoR reference form:
*(h₂)eg̑ʰ-
IE-CoR reference language:
Proto-Indo-European
Ideophonic:
no
Parallel derivation:
no
Proposed as cognate to:
*dʰegʷʰ- [Proto-Indo-European] scale: 1
Justification:
Many attempts have been made to try to relate the Indic words for 'day' from Ved. áhar ~ áhan- with the Germanic words for day (cf. esp. the heteroclitic stem common in North Germanic from PGmc. *dōgera- ~ *dōgena- 'a full day, twenty-four hours' in ON dœgr, dœgn, Sw. dygn, Nw. døger, døgn, Da. døgn, etc.). The loss of the initial dental in Indo-Iranian is, however, anomalous. Cf. EWAia I:154 and Kroonen 2013:97 s.v. *dōgera- ~ *dōgena- for further discussion. For Middle and Modern Indic forms from Vedic áhar, cf. Turner 1962–1966:44, no. 993.
