Cognate Set 83 – Meaning: narrow

IE-CoR reference form:
*temk-
IE-CoR reference language:
Proto-Indo-European
Ideophonic:
no
Parallel derivation:
no
Justification:
Iranic words for 'narrow' are better derived from *temk-, cf. already Horn 1893: 89 and Cheung 2007: 377f. Derivation from *tanu-ka- (thus e.g. Korn 2005: 168) might be formally possible but does not really explain the semantic difference found in Persian tang 'narrow' vs. tanuk 'thin'. None of the Iranic forms meaning 'narrow' require *tanu- or *tana-, while there is good evidence for a root *tank-/tanč- 'tp strain, press'.
