*kap- [Proto-Indo-European]
scale: 2
- Justification:
- Indic lexemes from Sanskrit kapā́la- 'cup, skull'. The Proto-Indic base *kap- is often considered to be cognate with Lat. caput, OEng. hēafod, etc., but there is some uncertainty over the etymology of the Modern Indic lexemes from Ved. kapā́la-, and of Ved. kapā́la- itself, cf. discussion in Mayrhofer EWAia I:300, Turner 1962–1966:137 no. 2744).

S.v. Ved. kapā́la- 'Schale, Schüssel, Hirnschale, Schädel'. No explanation that has reached unanimous acceptance. Perhaps to PIE *kap- 'fassen' (cf. Lat. capere 'nehmen', capula 'Schöpfgefäß', etc.), others see 'Hirnschale, Schädel' as primary and compare OE hafola 'Kopf' and the family from Lat. caput. Certain irregularities in the Middle and Modern Indic consider Turner (1966) to consider "at least influence" from Austroasiatic.

Cf. s.v. 2744 kapā́la- 'skull, cranium' (AV.) 'cup, jar, bowl' (TS.). Cf. note: "Although IE. (cf. OEng. hafola 'head') EWA i 155, the variant MIA. and NIA. forms suggest at least influence by Austro-as. ND 73 b 27".
