Cognate Set 8545 – Meaning: chest

IE-CoR reference form:
στῆθος / stē̃thos
IE-CoR reference language:
Greek: Ancient
Ideophonic:
no
Parallel derivation:
no
Proposed as cognate to:
*pstḗn [Proto-Indo-European] scale: 1
Justification:
The connection of the forms in this class to those from PIE *pstḗn in cognate set 2217 is disputed, and rest on assuming that it is root-cognate with a gloss στήνιον from Hesychius's Lexicon. The word-formation within Greek is, however, unclear (Frisk 1960-1972 II:795, Chantraine 1968–1980:1054-1055, Beekes 2010:1403-1404, cf. IEW 990).

  • Beekes, Robert: 1403-1404
S.v. AGk. στῆθος 'breast, chest'. [More or less directly translates/paraphrases the discussion of [Frisk 1960-1972](src-174) II:795.]
  • Chantraine, Pierre: 1054-1055
S.v. AGk. στῆθος 'poitrine' (de l'homme et de la femme). The etymology is obscure. One frequently compares Hesych. στήνιον· στῆθος, which is directly comparable to Skt. stána- 'poitrine d'une femme', Arm. stin (gen. stean), however the suffix -θος then remains unclear.
  • Frisk, Hjalmar: II:795
S.v. AGk. στῆθος 'männliche od. weibliche Brust'. Origin unclear, the similarity to στήνιον· στῆθος (Hesych.) (to Arm. stin, Ved. stána- 'weibliche Brust' is hardly coincidental ("kaum zufällig"). (Perhaps an analogy along the lines of στήνιον : στῆθος similarly like Lat. plēnus : πλῆθος???)
  • Pokorny, Julius: 990
S.v. *speno-, *stē̆no-, *p(ǝ)stē̆no- 'Zitze, Brustwarze, Brust', under which is connected Gk. στηνίον· στῆθος Hes. "daß στῆθος verwandt sei, ist schwer glaublich; hat neben θήνιον, τιθήνη einst ein *θη-θος, *τῆ-θος bestanden, das neben στηνίον eine Parallelbildung στῆθος ins Leben treten ließ??"
