Illustrative Context
That isn’t a bad idea, it’s a good idea.
Target Sense
- The most generic, default, unmarked adjective for positive judgement, as an antonym of bad.
- The target sense is a general judgement of positive, i.e. beneficial or appropriate in the current context.
Beware the wide polysemy of the English lexeme good.
- Avoid terms specific to the sense of morally right or pure. There is no necessary implication of this in the IE-CoR target sense of ‘good’.
- Avoid terms specific to any other sub-senses or contexts, such as specific terms for good weather, good-tasting, good-looking, beautiful, ‘cool’, etc..
- Avoid marked, intensifying words, such as excellent, wonderful, great.
- Some languages may not have a straightforward candidate lexeme for this target sense. In such cases, as well as the illustrative context given above, consider also which term for ‘good’ works well in a wider variety of usage contexts.
