Cognate Set 6597 – Meaning: bad

IE-CoR reference form:
*kakii̯ā̆-
IE-CoR reference language:
Proto-Albanian
Ideophonic:
no
Parallel derivation:
no
Proposed as cognate to:
*kako- [Proto-Greek] scale: 2
Justification:
Possibly to be connected with Greek κακός (cf. Orel 1998:175, Schumacher & Matzinger 2013:239, Beekes 2010:619-620), but it is difficult to be fully certain of the etymology (cf. Demiraj 1997:216-217); cf. discussion in cognate set 7332.

References
  • Demiraj, Bardhyl: 216-217
S.v. Alb. keq 'schlecht, schlimm, böse, elend'. "Bildung und Etymologie umstritten." Considers the question of a loan from Greek open.
  • Orel, Vladimir: 175
S.v. Alb. keq 'bad, evil', which O. considers to be from PAlb. kakja, related to Gk. κακός (so [Meyer 1891](src-585):184-185). Cf. entry for references to many other alternatively proposed etymologies.
  • Scarborough, Matthew:
The potential connection to Proto-Greek *kako- is worth considering, but the connection is too speculative to merge this class with [cognate set 7332](cog-7332). This has been indexed as a proposed cognacy relationship at a 50/50 level. Whether these forms could be further projected back to a PIE root with zero-grade vocalism *k̑h₂k-, *kn̥k̑-(vel sim.) remains unclear.
  • Schumacher, Stefan and Matzinger, Joachim: 239
Schumacher & Matzinger assume an Early Albanian pre-form *kakii̯a/ā-, comparing Ancient Greek κακός with a simple thematic suffix (i.e. *kak-o-).
