Cognate Set 598 – Meaning: hear

IE-CoR reference form:
*k̑leu̯-
IE-CoR reference language:
Proto-Indo-European
Ideophonic:
no
Parallel derivation:
no
Proposed as cognate to:
*k̑leu̯s- [Proto-Indo-European] scale: 4
Justification:
Armenian, Indo-Iranic, and Celtic lexemes derived from PIE *k̑leu̯- 'to hear' (LIV² 334-335, cf. Martirosyan 2010:313-315, EWAia II:666-667 Turner 1962–1966:730 no.12598, Cheung 2007:356-357, Matasović 2009:208). The parallel verbal root *k̑leu̯s- 'listen to' is a secondary verbal root abstracted from a desiderative formation from *k̑leu̯- 'hear' already in the protolanguage (cf. LIV² 336).
